Beauty and the beast wolves Y Craft illustrations are full of mystery and beauty to admire We will be reading this again several times over the next few weeks as we go in depth with discussion vocabulary and Thanks to HarperCollins for the ARC so many years ago that is still dear and special to my heart 9780060539191 There s no shortage of illustrated versions of Beauty and the Beast I grew up with the Mercer Mayer Beauty and the Beast and Jan Brett Beauty and the Beast but over time have collected several others Kinuko Craft s is easily the most opulent yet The text is pretty standard except what happens to Beauty s sisters but the illustrations are gorgeous and reward close examination almost every page has semi hidden figures animals and repeating motifs The geeky botanist in me loves the fact that flowers are rendered in such detail that they are recognizable down to genus There are foxgloves honeysuckle checkerbloom lilies columbines and even some parasitic Indian pipes The people are of course impossibly beautiful as well I think Kinuko Craft s women all pretty much look the same Her men in contrast come in two forms pretty boys and grizzled old men I wrote an essay a long time ago comparing her version of Sleeping Beauty and Trina Schart Hyman s The Sleeping Beauty and was amazed at how much character and consistency Hyman s people have apparently she was a portrait artist There s also one spread in which Beauty appears to be suffering from the Pre Raphaelite tendency toward neck dislocation and another of Beauty and her father that just seems to be from a different book altogether as he looks like Robert E Lee and is dressed in fashions that seem 19th century than the florid 18th century the rest of the book draws from But these are quibbles the book is lovely and I wish I d been a child when it was released so I had the time to spend hours staring at the pictures and daydreaming myself into them 9780060539191 Kinuko Y. Beauty and the beast wolves Plot wise it s an abridgement of Madame de Beaumont s already abridged version with very slight variations that don t negatively affect any of the key elements straightforward and traditional so you re not going to get any disagreeable surprises from the story itself I got a smile out of the warning at the beginning of the book that states this is loosely themed on Jeanne Marie Leprince de Beaumont s version because this is actually almost slavishly faithful and if this is loose then I don t know what faithfulness is supposed to be Mr Craft seems almost afraid of altering the standard plotline actually because the only actual and original change as opposed to simplifications and edits out was that he did actually introduce is a kiss which doesn t alter the theme or the plotline in any way. Beauty and the beast northwich Yes indeed This is the only BB picture book that I know of in which Beauty and Beast kiss And it s not a chaste peck on the cheek either I m rather disappointed this scene wasn t illustrated probably because this is an all audiences book and maybe also because Mrs Craft didn t want to do it so soon when she d already done it for Sleeping Beauty Might ve been controversial as well Oh and this is also one of the rare adaptations if not the only that includes the punishment for the sisters from the fairy tale And another aspect that pleased me is that this book includes Beaumont s implicit condemnation of the fairy who cursed the prince as evil that too many other adaptations overlook. Book beauty and the beast ebay The only reason the textual adaptation doesn t get higher marks from me is that it s not a flowy and elegant writing It s a simple prose and sometimes a bit blunt in delivery It doesn t elicit strong investment you don t feel the tension or the feelings of the characters and their interactions are clipped The emotions are left to the art It s the art you must look at for emotional investment It s simply gorgeous so lush so colourful so ethereal and sweet. Bookseller beauty and the beast But there s always a but and this but is a repetitive one for me with BB picture books there s something that disappoints me like a lot of great artists Mrs Craft sets her heart on Beauty only and doesn t do full justice to Beast And in her case I don t mean depiction wise because as far as looks appearance go her Beast is well done I mean in screen time There s only two illustrations in which he appears three if you count him in human form of which only one is of him and Beauty together Because this is Beauty and the Beast and because their relationship is crucial for the story I believe there shouldn t be neither an emphasis on Beauty alone nor unequal screen time for Beauty and Beast either together or separate On the positive the single panel depicting them together before they re seen together again with him in human form is an obvious homage to Walter Crane s famous illustration of the dining scene Here s how Mrs Craft depicted it Isn t it lovely That scene done by Crane is one of my all time favourite illustrations of the fairy tale and I was so happy to see Craft did it as well I don t know if it was an intentional homage or just an inspiration but that doesn t matter it wouldn t be the first homage to Crane s classic because H M Brock did this same scene like Crane s too. Beauty and the beast public domain Also look at this illustration of them together once the curse is broken The colour palette looks like an homage to the Disney animated motion picture because it s the same colour arrangement yellow dress for Beauty and blue for Beast Not to mention that the prince has lighter hair just like Adam has lighter hair than Belle I liked that Yes I said that the universe seems determined to reconcile me with Disney s version4. Beauty and the beast zoa 5 stars rounded up A book worth buying in hardback for your collection 9780060539191 A sumptuous version of Beauty and the Beast I really liked the Beast s character design in this one anything is better than the Disney buffalo look There s quite a lot of text in this one allowing the story to be told with plenty of detail but it makes for a longer read aloud I can t get over Kinuko Y Craft s illustrations they enchant me every single time 9780060539191 My daughter age 10 and I read this before bed It was a lovely telling of the story and the illustrations were outstanding so beautiful It was a perfect book to read cuddled together 9780060539191 Author Mahlon F Craft and illustrator Kinuko Craft whose earlier collaboration on Sleeping Beauty was a triumph of fairy tale retelling and artwork join forces again for this gorgeous picture book version of Beauty and the Beast Based upon the version of this story set down by Mme Jean Marie Leprince de Beaumont in 1756 itself based upon an earlier tale published by Mme de Villeneuve in 1740 this retelling follows the traditional outline of the story in which an impoverished merchant moves with his daughters to the countryside in order to retrench and to live frugally When good fortune seems to smile on the family again the merchant s daughters all clamor for rich gifts all save Beauty who asks only for a rose The procurement of that rose proves costly however and Beauty finds herself taking her father s place at a terrible beast s castle deep in the woods Here not is all as it seems and slowly the magic of love begins to work a change on our heroineBeauty and the Beast perhaps the best known example of the enchanted bridegroom tale type 425C in the Aarne Thompson Uther folklore classification system is one of my absolute favorite fairy tales so I was simply delighted to learn earlier this year that a new picture book retelling by Kinuko Craft one of my absolute favorite fairy tale illustrators was due out this July I am even thrilled that I had a chance to look at an advanced readers copy today thank you indeed to the colleague who provided it to me as it is a joy to peruse The retelling is a capable one but the true joy as expected was the lush artwork which Craft has apparently been working on for over a decade The initial painting which shows the country cottage to which the merchant and his daughters have withdrawn reminded me a bit of the tiny house in What Miranda Knew one of the formative titles of my early childhood With that initial positive association things only went from good to better The colors used are vibrant without being garish and each scene is a delight in every intricate detail The settings whether garden or palace are simply gorgeous the two page spread in which Beauty discovers the theatre left me simply breathless at its magnificence as are the costumes Beast himself is rather interesting part bear part leopard part boar and Beauty is lovely of course Craft ably captures the enchantment of the tale but she also captures the emotion whether it be the tender scene in which Beauty and her father embrace or the poignant one in which she finds the dying Beast Strongly recommended to all fairy tale fans as well as to admirers of Kinuko Craft s work 9780060539191 Kinuko Y Craft really rocks it with her illustrations Stunning exquisite ethereal I could go on and on with various adjectives to describe her artwork The Grade 2 students that I read aloud this book to enjoyed this particular version of a well loved fairy tale They did however think that although the story was nice there was too much writing They loved the pictures as much as I did, Beauty and the beast play ARTWORK 5 stars Pre Raphaelite style oil watercolours on geso panels, Book beauty and the beast ebay THE Rs Both are simplified than in the tale there s a kiss KEY ELEMENT CHANGED The family there s only 3 daughters no brothers FAVOURITE SCENE See in review, Beauty and the beastons recipes One of the most beautiful picture books of Beauty and the Beast I ve ever seen and it couldn t have been otherwise with K Y Craft as the illustrator.
